What happens when a federal judge who believes in the law meets a nun who answers to a
higher authority?

In Handy Dandy, acclaimed American playwright William Gibson—best known for his Broadway classics The Miracle Worker and Two for the Seesaw—brings his trademark wit,
intelligence, and compassion to a riveting theatrical duel between two formidable personalities.

First produced in New York in the mid-1980s, the play quickly drew attention for its crackling
dialogue and its vivid portrait of two people whose convictions refuse to bend.

When a passionate nun is arrested for protesting a nuclear power facility, the weary federal judge
assigned to her case expects a routine hearing and a quick resolution. Instead, he finds himself
drawn into a long night of spirited debate with a woman whose moral certainty proves every bit
as stubborn as his own.

As arguments fly and tempers flare, sharp humor and unexpected
moments of understanding begin to emerge, revealing the deeply human hearts behind their
opposing beliefs.

Inspired in part by the real civil-disobedience protests of the era, Handy Dandy transforms what might have been a political confrontation into something far richer: a lively clash of wit, conscience, skepticism, and reluctant admiration. Critics praised Gibson’s play as “a vigorous,
intelligent duel of personalities,” celebrating the playwright’s gift for blending sparkling
dialogue with genuine warmth. By turns funny, provocative, and deeply humane, Handy Dandy
proves that the most compelling drama can arise when two remarkable people simply refuse to
agree.

Phoebe Greyson plays Sister Molly Egan and Fil Formicola plays Judge Henry Pulawski.
Catherine Bryne directs.
