La película se desarrolla en 1962 cuando Eve Batiste, una niña de 10 años, vive en una próspera comunidad criolla-estadounidense de Luisiana con sus dos hermanos.
Su padre, Louis, un médico muy respetado en la comunidad, afirma descender del aristócrata francés Jean Paul Batiste, quien fundó el pueblo de Eve’s Bayou y lo nombró en honor a la esclava cuyas habilidades medicinales lo curaron de un grave caso de cólera.
Una noche, tras una fiesta desenfrenada, Eve presencia accidentalmente a su padre teniendo relaciones sexuales con Matty Mereaux, una amiga de la familia. Sin embargo, Cisely, su hermana mayor quien mantiene una relación muy afectuosa con su padre, convence a Eve de que malinterpretó un momento inocente.
La falta de fiabilidad de la memoria y la observación funcionan como temas importantes a lo largo de la película.

The film is set in 1962, when Eve Batiste, a 10-year-old girl, lives in a prosperous Creole-American community in Louisiana with her siblings.
Her father, Louis, a highly respected doctor in the community, claims to be a descendant of the French aristocrat Jean Paul Batiste, who founded the town of Eve’s Bayou and named it in honor of the enslaved woman whose medicinal skills cured him of a severe case of cholera.
One night, after a wild party, Eve accidentally witnesses her father having sex with Matty Mereaux, a family friend. However, Cisely, her older sister—who has a very close relationship with their father—convinces Eve that she misinterpreted an innocent moment.
The unreliability of memory and observation serve as major themes throughout the film.
