Sinopsis:
Duff Anderson, un trabajador ferroviario afroamericano en el sur de Estados Unidos, lucha por mantener su dignidad frente al racismo, las dificultades económicas y la injusticia social.
Tras casarse con Josie, la hija educada de un respetado predicador, Duff debe enfrentar las presiones de formar una familia sin someterse a las humillaciones impuestas por una sociedad segregada.
La película ofrece un retrato directo, honesto y profundamente compasivo de la vida cotidiana de la comunidad afroamericana durante la era de los Derechos Civiles.
