Synopsis
A masterwork of surrealist satire—a playful and devastating critique of the rituals, hypocrisies, and illusions of the upper class.
The film follows a group of bourgeois friends who repeatedly attempt to share a meal, only to have their gatherings interrupted by increasingly absurd and inexplicable events.
As dreams, fantasies, and reality merge, the characters move through a world governed by unstable logic. Military officers, diplomats, criminals, and clergy appear within a narrative that constantly undermines certainty and mocks social conventions.
Buñuel constructs a universe where etiquette becomes performance and privilege becomes self-parody. The repetition of situations, sudden shifts in reality, and deadpan treatment of the irrational expose the fragility of the social order the characters seek to preserve.
Blending surrealism with razor-sharp social criticism, the film examines class, desire, religion, and power. It remains celebrated for its wit, formal ingenuity, and its enduring ability to reveal the absurdity hidden beneath respectable appearances.
