San Miguel Playwrights presents its annual SMA Playwrights Showcase 2026, an evening of seven short original plays which are a mix of comedies and dramas on themes relevant to our San Miguel audiences.
Program:
“Feedback” by Ben Widdicombe. An amateur playwright asks her audience, “Did you like my play?”
“Aunt Peg the Computer” by William Considine. Four women, skilled office workers in the 1950’s, play bridge at lunchtime and face the introduction of a new machine that might replace them.
“Express Lane (to nowhere)” by Lauren Volpini turns a routine stop at a high-end grocery store into a showdown of entitlement and etiquette, ending in an unexpectedly tender collision of ego and humanity.
“Dad’s Last Supper” by Cyn Posner. When an aging father announces his plan to orchestrate his own dignified exit, his Orthodox son has other ideas—turning a final farewell into a chaotic clash of beliefs. A dark comedy about control, mortality, and the absurdity of family love.
“Cafe Parenthése” by Barbery Byfield. A mother suffering a rare vision disturbance travels to Paris to visit her estranged daughter. While revealing very different life agendas, the two attempt to repair a fragile bond.
“Crossing Lines” by Phoebe Greyson. In a world of shifting laws and unshifting hearts, one woman’s act of mercy turns her into a symbol she never wanted to be. “Crossing Lines” gives voice to the quiet fury of ordinary conscience.
“Anita in Swingville “ by Lia Gladstone is a slice from the life of jazz singer Anita O’Day: her commitment to music, her unique talent, and her struggles with lovers and drugs. Will she OD or kill it at Carnegie Hall?

The San Miguel Playwrights was created by playwright Mark Saunders (founder, SMA Diez Minutos International Play Festival) fourteen years ago. Its mission is to support members in their process of creating original plays, through ongoing feedback and revision, from page to stage.
“Our annual Showcase offers our playwrights an opportunity to revise their plays from conception through production, with audience feedback providing opportunities for further revision. It takes a village to create a theatrical piece. We have gained so much from our San Miguel audiences, our actors and directors whose support has been invaluable to our playwriting craft.”
