The Ballad of Narayama de Shohei Imamura adapta un antiguo relato popular japonés sobre una aldea remota sometida a leyes de supervivencia extremas. Cuando los recursos escasean, los habitantes cumplen la costumbre ancestral del ubasute: llevar a los ancianos al monte Narayama para morir una vez que alcanzan cierta edad.
En el centro está Orin (Sumiko Sakamoto), una mujer de 69 años que se prepara con dignidad y determinación para su partida ritual, mientras su hijo (Ken Ogata) lucha contra la brutalidad de la tradición.
Imamura utiliza imágenes naturales impactantes, fisicalidad cruda y una mirada antropológica sin concesiones para explorar los ciclos de la vida y la muerte, el sacrificio y la tensión entre la supervivencia colectiva y el amor individual.

Shohei Imamura’s The Ballad of Narayama adapts a centuries-old Japanese folktale about a remote mountain village bound by harsh laws of survival.
As resources dwindle, villagers follow the ancestral custom of ubasute: carrying elders to the sacred mountain of Narayama to die once they reach a certain age.
At the center of the story is Orin (Sumiko Sakamoto), a 69-year-old woman who prepares with dignity and resolve for her ritual departure, while her son (Ken Ogata) struggles with the brutality of the tradition.
Imamura uses striking natural imagery, raw physicality, and an unflinching anthropological gaze to explore cycles of life, death, sacrifice, and the tension between communal survival and individual love.
Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, the film stands as a powerful examination of human endurance and the moral complexities embedded in tradition.
