“Jonás, que cumplirá 25 años en el año 2000” es una de las obras definitorias del cine político europeo de los años setenta. Ambientada en la Suiza posterior a mayo del 68, la película sigue a ocho personajes interconectados—maestros, campesinos, intelectuales y soñadores—que intentan reconciliar sus ideales revolucionarios con los compromisos de la vida cotidiana.
A través de conversaciones, comidas compartidas y alianzas cambiantes, Alain Tanner construye un mosaico de desencanto y persistencia. El “Jonás” del título—un niño aún no nacido—se convierte en símbolo de una esperanza incierta, una generación que podría heredar tanto los fracasos como las aspiraciones de quienes la precedieron.

Jonas Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000 is one of the defining works of 1970s European political cinema. Set in post–May ’68 Switzerland, the film follows eight interconnected characters— teachers, farmers, intellectuals, and dreamers—struggling to reconcile their revolutionary ideals with the compromises of everyday life.
Through conversations, shared meals, and shifting alliances, Alain Tanner constructs a mosaic of disillusionment and persistence. The “Jonas” of the title—an unborn child—becomes a symbol of uncertain hope, a generation that may inherit both the failures and aspirations of those who came before.
Balancing humor and melancholy, the film examines the distance between political rhetoric and lived reality. It is less about grand events than about the quiet negotiations of conscience, community, and survival in a changing Europe.
