Sinopsis
A defining work of film noir—an adaptation of James M. Cain’s novel that distills desire, betrayal, and fatalism into a tightly wound narrative.
Set in Depression-era California, the film follows Frank Chambers, a drifter who takes a job at a roadside diner and becomes entangled with Cora, the owner’s restless wife. Their attraction quickly turns conspiratorial.
Driven by ambition and resentment, the two devise a plan to murder Cora’s husband and claim both the business and their freedom. What begins as calculated passion unravels into paranoia, guilt, and inevitability, as chance intervenes and the consequences of their actions close in.
Garnett constructs a world governed by impulse and consequence. The stark black-and-white cinematography, charged performances, and claustrophobic settings intensify the sense of moral entrapment.
