NEW ART STUDIO IN THE BIBLIOTECA PUBLICA

Spring has sprung and there’s lots going on at the Biblioteca Publica! We are excited to announce a new project that has been in the works for the past several months. Under the leadership of Board Member and architect, Federico Vidargas, the old Bodega de Sorpresas space has been transformed to create a beautiful new art studio for the community, funded entirely by an anonymous art-loving patron.

In this modern space, the Biblioteca will offer classes for 12-16 students at various times throughout the week for children, adolescents and adults. We anticipate offering classes in different mediums including drawing, painting, design, sculpture and ceramics. We are partnering with the Instituto Allende so their Bachelor of Fine Arts students can fulfill their social service commitment of their degree by teaching some art classes in this new location. As well, several professional artists will teach advanced art classes, along with educational workshops on subjects like architecture and art history in both Spanish and English. The Biblioteca is grateful to Colleen Sorenson for donating the use of her kiln for ceramics workshops.

To celebrate this new art studio, the staff and Board of the Biblioteca invite you to an open house so you can see the new studio on Saturday, March 26 from 4 – 6pm.

During the inaugural event for this beautiful studio, we will conduct a silent art auction curated with only the most sought after, fabulous local and international artists. 100% of the funds from the auction will be used to purchase art supplies and pay for teachers for our art programs. The auction will include pieces from the following artists – Rodrigo de la Sierra, Carmen Parra, Pedro Friedeberg, Juan Ezcurdia, Toller Cranston, Keith Miller, Peter Leventhal, Alejandro Rivera Leal, Santiago Corral, Yui Sakamoto, Mai Onno, Alfredo Bucay Atri, Gene Johnson, Russell Monk, Edward Swift, Joaquin Piñeiro, Holly Wilmeth, Project B with Barbara Levine and Paige Ramey, Paul Rodríguez, Austin Lowrey and Miguel Angel Morales. We are grateful to Lavinia’s Framing for generously donating to frame a couple of pieces.

A preview of the silent auction is already available online at https://labibliotecapublica.org/subasta/. Then on Friday, March 25 starting at 12pm in the patio of the Biblioteca, you will be able to view these items in person and participate in the silent auction. The auction will continue on Saturday, March 26 starting at 4pm with a festive reception including light botanas donated by Chef Gaby Green.

Along with these incredible pieces of art, you can donate to the art program by purchasing art supplies needed for our children’s classes. Beautiful second-hand art books will be on sale too at the event on March 26.

The Biblioteca will open the new art studio to students in early April. So look soon for announcements regarding art classes and schedules from our new art program coordinator, Miguel Angel Morales.
