This Friday, April 26th, we will visit:

Home of Annabella Martinez. Designed and built by her husband Francois, and completed 10 years ago.

SRA Martinez has lived in San Miguel de Allende for 50 years, was an actress, producer, restauranteur and had her own theatre in a former home.

By the owners own description – this is a Bohemian home.

Coming through the gated entry, you pass a mermaid sculpture and the mesquite tree which give the home its name.

Entering the large garden with citrus and ficus trees, it is almost necessary to stop and peruse the environ. Trees, a fountain, patio furniture, walls and ceilings are all decorated – with an
amazing verity of items.

The covered portion is filled with photos of her many family members and friends from over her 83 years on this earth.

Plants and trees have beads, glistening globes, artifacts and
more hanging from limbs, a wonderful, colorful wall hanging is actually a shower curtain that she purchased in Cuba.

Can you pick out the mermaid? Sit a bit, look around this space – it
is almost like a fairy land.

Entering the first floor of the house, you see cozy and warm spaces for dining and socializing.

Some paintings by Richard Peterson who taught at the local Instituto Allende, hang at one end of the room and on the opposite wall is a portrait of SRA Martinez that he painted when she was 35 years of age and managing the Mama Mia Restaurant (now
defunct) here in San Miguel de Allende.

The photograph beside it is of herself and Francois. Note that in the
photo, she is sitting on the very bench seat in front of you.

Under the stairs is a “Harry Potter” storage room with a charming low door. We were told that a dead woman lives inside and comes out for Dia de los Muertos.

A portrait over the piano is of SRA Martinez when she was 16 years young and learned to play it.

Have you noticed the dried roses? Look up to the ceiling – these come from a loving tradition started by her husband: weekly, he would bring her a bouquet of fresh roses.

After his death and her move to this home – she continued to have roses delivered weekly, she would dry them and then place them on the rafters. A testament to a special man.

The tidy kitchen has a wall of photos that represent people of the arts that she has admired over the years.

A stair step, open spice cabinet is a wonder of convenience. And, more roses.

Head up the indoor stair to a floor of rooms that she occasionally rents for a month at a time -one is named “Greece” and has photos and memorabilia from that country.

Also a “peek” view to the city down below. Another is named “Paris” again with momentos from there. The bath even has a very “French” piece of equipment- a bidet.

The small eating table and mini-kitchen is a common space shared by both suites.

Up the spiral staircase, you climb to an expansive terrace with views to the west over the city.

Directly in front of and below you, is a garden and the home of her grandson, who is studying to be a veterinarian.

He trains raptors of different types – eagles and hawks. There
is a resident black eagle in the garden – you’ll need to search the shadows to find him.

Returning to the entry courtyard via the outdoor spiral stair, check if you have counted all the mermaids in the house.

The blessing is that there is just one mesquite tree!

Casa de Angel is the perfect combination of old world colonial charm and new world amenities.

Perched on 5000 square feet high above the city lights, this
spectacular five-bedroom has undergone extensive renovations, making it one of the most luxurious on the block.

You will feel like you are flying above the clouds.

Richly appointed, this exceptional home features hand-made furnishings, fabrics, and artwork.

The living room is spacious and bright, with plenty of room
for everyone to gather after a long day filled with exploring galleries, snacking at charming cafes, and taking in the beauty of the city.

Local artwork fills the walls, accentuating the authenticity of the home and the beauty of the city.

The gourmet kitchen offers more than enough modern amenities to whip up delicious meals, and you have the option to hire a personal chef if you’d like to try something more authentic!

Five fireplaces can be found throughout the home, sure to keep you toasty warm if the night gets a bit cool.

This exquisite home has five bedrooms, all outfitted with luxurious bedding and amenities.

There are four king bedrooms in all and one room with two twins,
perfect for children.

While the entirety of the home is astounding, the most magical part has to be the third-floor terrace. Equipped with its own kitchen and charming gazebo, you’ll love spending warm evenings up here dining alfresco and taking in sweeping, spectacular vistas of the city, lake, and mountains.

After walking all day, there’s nothing better than a rejuvenating soak in the hot tub, and when the sun goes down the fire pit is the perfect spot from which to take it all in.
