Inspirada en la historia real de Christiane y Gudrun Ensslin, la obra cumbre de Margarethe von Trotta sigue a dos hermanas cuyas vidas toman rumbos radicalmente distintos: Juliane es una periodista comprometida con la reforma a través del diálogo, mientras Marianne se une a un grupo revolucionario militante.

Cuando Marianne es encarcelada y posteriormente encontrada muerta en circunstancias sospechosas, Juliane queda obligada a enfrentar el legado de las decisiones de su hermana, así como el silencio de una sociedad incapaz de confrontar su propia complicidad.

Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, Marianne and Juliane (Die bleierne Zeit) is a powerful exploration of sisterhood, political commitment, and the costs of resistance.

Inspired by the real-life story of Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin, Margarethe von Trotta’s landmark film follows two sisters whose lives diverge in radical ways: is a journalist committed to reform through dialogue, while Marianne joins a militant revolutionary group. When Marianne is imprisoned and later found dead under suspicious circumstances, Juliane is left to confront the legacy of her sister’s choices, as well as the silence of a society unwilling to face its own complicity.

Von Trotta crafts an intimate yet politically charged portrait of women caught in the storm of history, blending personal tragedy with broader questions of justice, memory, and dissent.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Brad Rockwell.
