Friday, August 21th we’ll visit:
Perched on a prominent hillside corner in Colonia Azteca, Casa Tres Puertas is a striking architectural collaboration between house designer Brigham Golden and interior curator Lynn Rawden.
Built directly into the solid rock of the slope, the home blends traditional Mexican craftsmanship with modern design, featuring a hand-carved stone exterior, warm interior walls of adobe, structural wood beams, and cantera stone.
Conceived primarily as a multigenerational family home, the property also incorporates an independent penthouse apartment and a lower-level office and workshop for BGolden Productions, one of San Miguel’s premier production companies.
Three distinct street entrances provide easy access and privacy across its multi-tier layout, where natural light fills the open living spaces and connects them to three garden patios featuring stone fountains.
The light-filled interiors double as an intimate private gallery, showcasing an eclectic collection of art by Spencer Tunick, Pedro Friedeberg, and Arturo Meade, alongside cultural artifacts gathered from around the world.
At the top, the primary master suite and the penthouse apartment offer tranquil retreats with expansive terraces framing unobstructed westward views of the mountains sunset and iconic Centro skyline.
Come on in with a smile on your face to this former kindergarten teacher’s unique use of color! Pink walls, purple walls, lime green and turquoise… even a tangerine kitchen!
When she began renting, the house was a colorless bore except for the architecturally interesting 3-level square staircase. It had a bland, landscaping-free front entry.
Lulu set out to welcome her visitors by livening up the 4 outdoor areas with decorative rocks and plants.
Enter the house and see a second Lulu! This Lulu is so elegant – ready to attend a black-tie ball!
Various collections abound such as Oaxacan fantasy animals and many paintings, mostly done by local artists such as Rhoda Draws, Andrew Osta, and Ruben Morales.
We were struck by Kabriele Rosas’s print of the exhausted horse on the toilet!
The home is a gallery of sorts decorated and curated by Lulu featuring her art! Elaborate mannequins, heads, and mirrors abound and fill the home with her personal style.
You can view the art room on the third level, full of supplies and pieces waiting to be created and shared.
The second sala or living room has a lively cow theme, but don’t let the elaborate Indonesian shell and feather necklace distract you from the masks on display.
The guest bedroom is reminiscent of Thailand, with elephants everywhere!
The master bathroom is a private lavender sanctuary complete with a glasses collection that permits the wearer to signal any mood.
Our hostess commissioned two colorful murals by Mexican muralists. The first one outside of the master bedroom has the sun rising over tall cacti.
The terrace wall has an artful dragon designed by Lulu in honor of her Chinese birth symbol.
While up on the terrace don’t miss the beautiful view of lovely San Miguel de Allende!
